Essential oils work can work well to help improve the condition of some of our body systems, in particular; the skin, respiratory and nervous systems. Particularly suitable to enhance or shift mood, to help relieve the symptoms of congestion in the respiratory system and for some skin irritations and infections.
Dilution:
Essential oils are concentrated powerhouses of natural benefit. Therefore you should only use a very small amount at any one time. With the exception of tea tree and lavender you should not put any other essential oil neat on the skin. Always dilute – 1-2 drops per 5ml of carrier. The oils will disperse well in vegetable oil, gels, creams, bath milk and alcohol. When used safely and diluted with the right medium they can be an effective ingredient in massage preparations, inhalants, in diffusers and humidifiers, in skin creams and lotions and shampoos/conditioners.
Medical conditions and pregnancy:
If you have any medical conditions or are pregnant, take advice from your doctor before using. Mandarin is thought to be completely safe to use during pregnancy.
Application:
Do not take internally. If you have sensitive skin or are known to be allergic to plants, it is wise to do a patch test. Put one drop of the oil in a teaspoon of carrier and rub into the skin behind the ear in the crook of the arm. Leave for 24 hours to see if there is any reaction.
Tea tree and Lavender are the only two oils recommended to use neat on the skin. Do not overdose. Use only the dilutions and amounts recommended.
Phototoxicity:
Some oils are thought to be phototoxic which means that some of their chemical components can react with UV light and affect the skin – sometimes permanently. Therefore, although we use such small doses of oils, it is prudent to avoid being exposed to strong sunlight for 12 hours after you have had the following oils on your skin; Expressed lemon, lime, grapefruit, mandarin, sweet orange, bergamot, ginger and patchouli. Our bergamot oils is bergaptene free which means the phototoxic agent has been removed and is completely safe to use before going out in the sun.
